Hawkers in Kibera are facing hard times in their daily business sales has the current weather is not favouring their business since the onset of April rains.
Speaking at DC area, the hawkers said that during this rainy season, they encounter hard times since most of their customers remain indoors to avoid being rained on and mud caused by heavy rains in the slums.
One of the hawkers, John Juma said that he is forced to wake up early despite the morning cold to pass all round Kibera to sell his items before the rains pour.
"As hawkers, we move from place to place with the items we sell on our shoulders and backs within the slums of Kibera to look for customers to sell to. During the rains our businesses get interrupted as most of the feeder roads entering interior Kibera slums are impassable during the rains. At times, we are rained on in the process of looking for customers. Some items we sell such as soap gets spoiled by rain water thus incurring losses, "said Sammy Korir, a hawker.
The hawkers have now asked the county government to set them a place within the slums and build sheds and stalls to sell their items any time without facing hard times especially this rain season.
