According to the study, by the school of public health, many health facilities cannot handle complications that come alongside child birth.

The study casts doubt on the 'give birth at any clinic' strategy by the government.

"Our findings suggest that the current strategy of 'birth at any clinic' is likely wrong and that poor quality is undermining the goal of reducing maternal and newborn mortality around the world," said Margaret Kruk , associate professor of global health at Havard health.

According to the research, 40 percent of birth is taking place in poor quality facilities with crucial deficiencies in staffing , infrastructure , referral systems and routine emergency care practices.

The study identified as 'Quality of basic maternal care functions in health facilities of five African countries' was published on Friday in the KLancet Global Health.

The researchers analyzed data from a survey funded by USAID in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Namibia.
