After failing to hold a major campaign rally in Nairobi in the last two weeks, there have been reports that Jubilee’s Nairobi gubernatorial candidate, Mike Sonko, is running out of cash to use in campaigning. The Nairobi senator, who wants to unseat ODM’s Governor Evans Kidero, is known to be among the richest politicians in the country. He often gives his supporters financial help when presented with a problem. Quoting campaign insiders, The Standard is reporting that Mr Sonko’s pockets are running dry, even as the campaign for the lucrative seat hots up. The senator, a former member of parliament for Makadara, has admitted reducing campaign costs by scaling down his campaign activities. He, however, said the move was tactical, and was not related to financial constraints. “Those who think Sonko is broke are in for a rude shock. I have deliberately opted for house-to-house, business-to-business and estate-to-estate campaigns while my running mate Polycarp Igathe meets business and professional groups,” he said, as quoted by the Standard. Meanwhile, Sonko’s main rival, Governor Kidero, has been holding rallies in many parts of the city.
