The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko, has directed that Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario and Principal Secretary Richard Ekai be charged with abuse of office for mismanagement of the Rio Olympics games.
In his report, the DPP said there was a loss of over Sh100 million relating to the games, held in Brazil in August 2016.
Tobiko indicated that the Ministry incurred an extra cost Sh6.6 million by catering for an extra six people in the delegation to Rio.
Another Sh59.153 million was lost on irregular payments on tickets irregularly procured by Ekai and the Director of Administration at the Sports Ministry, Haron Komen.
Athletes and Central Management officials were also said to have been given extra allowances totaling Sh15.9 million, exceeding Salaries and Remuneratio Commission (SRC) limit.
The DPP said an investigation should also be conducted to establish why unnamed officials were paid allowances but did not travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. About Sh16 million was lost on payments of these unnamed people
On the spot too, are top Sports Ministry and National Olympics Committee - Kenya (Nock) officials.
