Police in Kakamega are investigating hate leaflets that were circulated in the town ahead of the October 26 fresh election.
Kakamega County police boss Tito Kilonzi revealed that the leaflets, which asked members of a certain community to leave, were dropped in the streets Tuesday night by unknown people.
“We suspect criminal elements are taking advantage of the political environment in the country to author and circulate the leaflets in order to instill fear in Kenyans. The police will not allow that to go on,” Kilonzi said during a Wednesday presser.
He said they are yet to arreast anyone but were following crucial leads to smoke out the authors.
“We urge people to be calm and let the police handle the issue,” added Kilonzi. He said that security has been beefed up in the county to see to it that that those wishing to participate in the election cast their ballot in peace.“The security committee has assessed the situation in this area and decided that those who will disrupt peace must be dealt with accordingly. Those not interested in voting should keep off polling centres,” he said.
