Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Mombasa branch chairman Mohammed Hatimy has dismissed claims by Deputy President William Ruto that the Coast region has started embracing Jubilee.
Hatimy said that the political path Mombasa takes determines which path the other coastal counties will take. The ODM chairman said the opposition party is the strongest party in the entire Coastal region and will reign in the August 8 polls.“Once a political party controls Mombasa, it has a significant influence in Kwale, Lamu, Taita Taveta and Kilifi counties and this is why there has been intense political activities,” said Hatimy, as quoted by the Standard.“But I want to tell Jubilee that ODM is still in control of Mombasa and Coast. It is going to win in the region,” he added.Jubilee has been making inroads in the region that is perceived to be an opposition zone, judging by the frequent visits by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto to launch various development projects.Ruto said that defections by several MPs in the region from ODM and other opposition parties show how Jubilee is gaining popularity in the area.“Our development record at the Coast has transformed the region into a Jubilee zone. We are going to win the governorship and other seats in Mombasa,” said Ruto.In the 2013 general election, Jubilee did not get a single elective seat in Mombasa.
