For the very first time in the regions political history, a woman candidate has scaled above all obstacles and floored male aspirants in a competitive electoral process.
Mrs Sophia Abdinoor has been elected as the first female MP for Ijara constituency in a region dominated by male politicians and male dominance in almost all leadership positions.
Abdinoor contested on a PDR ticket and won the seat with 6,001 votes.
Her triumph will be seen by many as a win for the Kenyan woman as the civil society continues to pressure the National Assembly to pass the two-third gender rule.
