Several food hawkers were on Thursday arrested by Nakuru County health officials after they defied the order banning them from hawking food within the town.

The operation which was led by the county public health officer Samuel King’ori within the CBD, saw many arrested most of them being those hawking eggs and boiled maize.

Speaking after the operation, King’ori said that they were forced to carry out the operation to show that they are serious about the ban.

“The order clearly stated that no one should be found hawking or selling food in the open, but they decided to defy it and went on selling food contrary to the ban,” said King’ori.

The office confirmed that they arrested several of them while many managed to escape. He advised people to take precautionary measures concerning the issue considering that cholera outbreak was reported in some parts of the country. (in Migori County).

 King’ori added that the ban will stay in force until such a time when they will be convinced that the county is safe.

“We have to assess how risky and exposed we might be and the ban will stay until we lift it,” said King’ori.

The ban which was issued on Wednesday prohibited hawking of food in public or selling of food in open spaces.
