Hawkers in Thika Town have been warned against displaying their merchandise on non-motorised lanes which has been said to affect pedestrians' movements.
Speaking at her office in Thika Town Hall on Friday, Thika sub-county administrator Janet Mumbi instead asked the hawkers to do their business in designated hawking areas in the town.
Mumbi noted that pedestrians were resorting to using roads and, in turn, causing traffic congestions in the town centre.
"We have been going round the town the whole of this week and we have noted that hawkers have encroached on almost all the lanes set aside for pedestrians' use. This is unacceptable and we ask them to go back to their designated zones to avoid creating unnecessary traffic in the town centre," said Mumbi.
She gave the hawkers up to Friday next week to comply upon which action will be taken against those who will still be hawking on the lanes.
Mumbi has also asked the hawkers to stop hawking in front of other businesses saying that she has received complaints from various businesspeople about the same.
"Nobody is allowed to obstruct another person's business in order to do theirs. Those doing that should stop it forthwith before we start cracking the whip," said Mumbi.
