The hawkers community in Kisumu county has expressed concern in what they say is neglect from the county government.
They said hawking has employed many and therefore they should be given the same consideration as other sectors in the city.
Led by their chairman Collins Choni, the hawkers said that they have tried in the past two years with no vain to meet the county governor Jack Ranguma who had promised them goodies during his campaign periods.
He said that they have also tried to convey their grievances which are yet to be solved to other county leaders including the women representative Rose Nyamunga and the officials from the Milimani Ward.
Speaking at a local radio station on Friday, Choni said that the county government promised to import containers with items which were to be given to them to sell in the city. He said that the promise has not been fulfilled.
“We had hopes to improve in sales once the said containers were brought. We are yet to receive the goods four years after we elected our leaders,” said Choni.
His sentiments were echoed by the groups secretary Lucas Oleng’a who said that the hawkers have also been having problems in getting bursary funds.
“Most of us have never received funds whenever we apply for bursaries at the Milimani Ward yet most of us are registered voters in the area,” said Oleng’a.
