Hawkers in Nakuru have something to smile about after the county government of Nakuru agreed to construct new toilets in all markets as well as along hawkers stalls in town.
Nakuru county public health officer Samuel Kingori said that there is a shortage of public toilets in Nakuru town and some hawkers have turned some stalls into toilets. Kingo'ri said that his department will ensure that there are enough toilets not only for hawkers but also for the public.
"We have a problem with the issue of toilets in town and hawkers have been going to an extend of turning some stalls into toilets and this is a health disaster," he said.
"We have a plan of putting up new toilets at all markets so that hawkers and all those visiting markets can have somewhere to visit," he added.
Last month the hawkers and street traders union had petitioned the county government to put up new toilets or they stop paying taxes.
