Uasin Gishu County leaders have called on political leaders to intervene and end the ongoing hawker's menace in Eldoret town.
The leaders led by GEMA national Secretary General Paul Kinyanjui said the recent confrontation between hawkers and county enforcement officers was politically castigated and should be stopped.
"We are condemning the recent confrontation between the hawkers and county askaris. Politicians from the region should intervene to end the hawker's menace before the situation gets out of hand,” he said.
Kinyanjui said if the issue will not be solved amicably using political leaders, hatred among communities living in the region is likely to emerge.
“Community conflicts may occur if the situation is not solved now. It is time for leaders to come into an agreement and ensure the hawkers are moved using proper means from the CDB failure to which we will witness fights among the various communities in town,” he stated.
He called on Uasin Gishu county governor Jackson Mandago to invite political leaders and hawkers’ leaders to chat the way forward.
“Mandago should drop the hard stance and allow talks so that to find an amicable solution over the matter. Hawkers also contribute much to the county’s economy through paying of taxes,” he noted.
Kinyanjui was speaking in Eldoret town on Monday.
