Hawkers at the Nasha Square Market in Nakuru town now want their chairmen changed over what they termed as 'incompetence.'
The hawkers said the market chairmen have failed to represent them fully and are working with certain cartels to fleece them.
Through the Nakuru Hawkers and Street Traders patron Simon ole Nasieku, the traders said they need knew chairmen who will advance and fight for their interests.
"We have over 25 chairmen in the market but these people are working with cartels to extort money from us and this is not what we elected them for," said Nasieku.
He blamed the chairmen for advancing and protecting the interests of area MCA Stephen Kuria.
"These people were elected by Kuria to protect his interests at the market and that is what they are doing," he said.
A hawker who declined to be named said the chairmen are serving as agents of cartels that are extorting money from them.
"They are the people who come to collect the money and take it to the cartels instead of protecting is they are the ones finishing us and that is why we want them out," he said.
However, Antony Mwai, one of the chairmen, dismissed the calls for their ouster saying they are being propagated by people who want to illegally take control of the market.
“We were elected by the traders and we are serving the people who elected us and not an individual. The complaints are coming from a few people and not the traders in this market,” said Mwai
MCA Kuria declined to comment on the issue.
