A political activist has blamed the ongoing controversy surrounding the eviction of hawkers from the Central Business District by the County Government on poor planning of the town by consecutive governments. Activist James Kaka, argued that Nakuru town lacks proper urban planning strategies a fact that contributes to congestion and untidiness. He said the county government must hence put in place adequate and sustainable urban planning strategies to ensure that all stakeholders and members of the public are served efficiently. “The hawker’s problems are arising out of poor urban planning. It is obvious that these traders will lose business opportunities if they are moved out of the CBD.on the other hand it is prudent that the county government has to restructure operations in the town to provide for cleanliness and sanity,’’said Kaka who unsuccessfully vied for the Menengai Ward county assembly representative seat in the last general elections. He added that it will be also unfair for members of the public who cannot afford to buy goods from shops and other outlets in the CBD to walk long distances in search of cheaper goods from hawkers. According to the activist, the county government needs to critically examine the pros and cons of its decision to evict low class traders from the town center while considering the need to d-congest it. He added: what we are experiencing is as a result of consecutive governments to restructure our town putting in consideration all sectors of the economy and social amenities. We are fighting over what we inherited from colonialists and it is high time we created our own ample urban environment to cater for our needs,’’
