A head teacher has been summoned following an incident where parents stormed the institution after pupils were sent home to collect firewood during tuition hours.
Robert Obiria, an Education officer in Gesima Zone summoned Charles Getuno, the head teacher of Nyakongo Primary School on Wednesday after angry parents escorted their children to school to demand an explanation.
Addressing pupils and a section of parents, Obiria termed the incident unfortunate and a violation of regulations as set by the ministry.
“Our children should always be in school from 8am to 4pm and those are the rules. It is quite unfortunate that someone can choose to violate rules that are set by the ministry. He has to record a statement in my office if not, he will face disciplinary actions,” Obiria said.
Parents led by James Ong’ondi, accused the head teacher of repeatedly using pupils as casual labourers even during tuition hours despite them having expressed their concerns.
“This is not the first time. Sometimes they are sent for water, money and now firewood. He has never respected our opinions because we have raised the issue on several occasions. We urge the ministry to take action,” he said.
Getuno, when contacted on phone defended his move and accused parents of being an impediment to improving education in the area.
“The firewood is meant for preparation for KCPE. We will be having visitors and I think there is nothing wrong for preparing early. It will be difficult to handle invigilators if we don't do that,” he said.
