The government has commenced investigations into an incident in which six new borne babies died at the Kangundo Level Four hospital in Machakos town.
The Parliamentary Select Committee on Health led by Dr James Nyikal toured the facility on Thursday for a fact finding mission where it involved National Health Regulatory Agencies including the Nursing Council of Kenya, Pharmacy and Poisons Board and Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board.
Addressing the media after conducting the closed door meeting, Dr Nyikal announced that a comprehensive report on the matter will be made public in two weeks when the concerned agencies file back their independent findings.
"What we have is raw facts as provided by the concerned but not conclusive yet, but as a committee of parliament we shall get conclusive reports from all the health regulatory bodies in two weeks filed and adopt the report," he said.
Dr Nyikal also questioned why a significant number of children would die almost the same time.
"Obviously we need to know the circumstances behind the deaths because it is not usual that all premature babies die at the same time," said Dr Nyikal who is also a pediatrician.
The hospital superintendent Dr Super Tunje initially described the deaths as 'normal' saying the maternity unit staff could not do much to prevent deaths.
The probe comes days after Governor Alfred Mutua suspended the hospital administrator Lawrence Mulungye over the incident.
