The exercise is meant to improve sanitary conditions and the general face of the area.

According to Kepher Ombacho, the director of Public Health in the ministry, landlords’ accommodation tenants without proper sanitary provisions will be arrested and prosecuted for holding people's welfare at a ransom.

“The poor environmental conditions of slum areas in this country are well-documented. The ministry has drafted a policy on health and sanitation. Very soon we are conducting a crackdown on homesteads without proper toilets. Our intention is not to just to punish but to improve the living standards and to also ensure people live in a clean and safe environment,’' said Ombacho.

The public health officer has also encouraged tenants living in plots without proper sanitation to face their landlords and demand for a conducive environment.

"It is the duty of tenants to demand for a conducive from their landlords. If they fail to do guarantee them good sanitation, then they should report it to us for necessary action," added Ombicho.

He further cited solid waste management as a big nightmare in Kibera slums blaming the Nairobi County government for failing to put the necessary provisions to address the issue.
