Any person found selling alcohol to an intoxicated person will have to part with Ksh50,000 as fine, Thika West Sub County public health officer Mr Patrick Mburu has said.
Speaking on Tuesday in Thika town during a meeting with bar and restaurant stakeholders, Mr Mburu said that the Kiambu Alcoholic Control Act 2013/2014 stipulates that bar owners should not sale alcohol to an intoxicated person or they risk a heavy fine by the county government.
The officer added that the Kiambu law is so vigilant on alcohol and drug abuse noting that bars and restaurants that have bold writing ‘SMOKING ZONE’ in their toilets also risk a heavy slap of Ksh500,000 since the smoking zone should not be inside the bar.
“Those bars and restaurants where you find the ‘SMOKING ZONE’ vividly written on the toilet wall will soon suffer Ksh500,000 fine since smoking zones should be in an open environment,” said Mburu.
Mburu further cautioned smokers in bars saying if found by the public health officers they will also suffer a fine of Ksh50,000 and again putting the second partner into secondary smoking will be added another Ksh50,000 if taken to court by the county government.
“Smokers are not spared as well for they will suffer up to Ksh100,000 fine for smoking in the bar and introducing another partner as a passive smoker,” warned the officer.
