Garissa Health Chief Officer Mohamed Farah has dismissed claims that cholera started in the Daadab refugee camp.
Mr. Farah dismissed the claims after eight people died of cholera in Garissa County following new cases of cholera being reported in Garissa and neighboring Madogo division of Tana River county.
Last week, a Garissa High School student from Hagadera refugee camp was diagnosed with the disease.
Mr. Farah, however, said they suspect the disease might have originated from Tana River County as some of the residents from Tana River come to Garissa daily in the informal sector.
“More than 90 percent of the cases we have received at the Garissa County Referral Hospital are from the neighboring Tana River,” he said.
Mr. Farah said the county department of Health has put up measures on how to contain the spread of the disease adding that more than 200 people had been diagnosed and treated at an isolation unit at the Garissa County Referral Hospital.
“We have put up all the necessary measures to contain the situation. Among the measures the department has undertaken to curb the spread of the contagious disease includes treatment of water sources used by the residents in the two counties,” said Mr. Farah.
