Health officers in Nakuru County on Tuesday afternoon raided a variety of supermarkets in a bid to establish the quality of the goods they were selling
Nakuru County Public Health Officer Simon Kingori said that they had recovered lots of expired goods from Gilanis, Tuskys, Woolmart and Naivas supermarkets in their afternoon raid
“We have nabbed a variety of goods including flour, meat, chicken and dairy products that were on the counters ready to be sold,” he added.
He was speaking during a press briefing at his office, where he noted that the supermarkets would be charged in court on Wednesday for selling expired items.
“We intend to go to court tomorrow (Wednesday) morning seeking a penalty for the sellers. We also would like a court order seeking to destroy the goods that were found unfit for human consumption,” he added
According to Kingori, the raid in other supermarkets will continue till they are assured the quality of goods is upheld
“We are also targeting butcheries and other outlets that handle human food. This includes hotels and retail shops in the county,” he added
He called on Kenyans to be careful about the meals they buy especially in supermarkets.
