The Nakuru county public health department has vowed to continue with random swoops in various butcheries to crack a whip on unscrupulous business people selling uninspected meat.

County public health officer Samuel King’ori on Sunday said the department was concerned with the rapid increase of the criminal activities, adding that they were working round the clock to arrest the situation.

“Those involved in the sale of un-inspected meat are criminals. We have our ears on the ground and we are carrying out impromptu inspections of all butcheries, and local meat outlets,” said the officer in an interview in Nakuru town.

He added: "Animals should be slaughtered in a recognised abattoir and the meat duly inspected by certified public health officers."

This comes amid rife speculation that un-inspected meat from donkeys and other wild meat was making its way to tables of meat lovers as dishonest meat dealers make a quick shilling at the expense of the unsuspecting public.

Sources said that crooked business people were flouting public health regulations by sneaking unexamined meat to meat selling points, thereby putting the health of consumers at stake.

“These days l am more particular about the source of my meat since the slaughter of donkeys became rampant in Nakuru and its environs. I only buy meat from outlets that I have confidence in. Also eating 'nyama choma' is no longer my pastime,” said a resident, who sought anonymity.
