The outgoing Council of Governors chairman Peter Munya says devolution has improved the health sector across the country.
Munya said this has been achieved through using billion of shillings to develop the sector, by training of health workers, acquiring latest medical equipment, increasing health facilities among other things.
“In 2012, there were only 3,757 nurses while currently the number of nurses at the county facilities stand at 24, 373 while those at the National referral facilities are 1,224,” said Munya.
Speaking Monday when he released a report on State of Devolution, the Meru governor said 4,080 medics were working at county amenities, while 5,557 others were offering services at the National referral facilities, leading to a growth of 4,637 doctors.
He noted that international accepted standards were yet to be met in the distribution of health workers.
“County’s understood that Universal health coverage and investment in health system can accelerate both National and global efforts to ensure access to health care to anyone who needs it and leaving anyone behind,” he added, Monday.
All these, he said, had been achieved despite numerous challenges.
Munya gave the report during his last term in office before the governors elected Turkana governor Josphat Nanok as their new chairman.
