Kisumu County Assembly has passed a motion to pay a monthly stipend of Sh 5,000 to community health workers in the county in the next financial year.
The motion moved by the chairman of the health committee Paul Maneja will see a total of 2,349 community health workers remunerated.
Maneja who represents West Kisumu Ward says that due to lack of funds, the county will first start with 426 community health workers who will be paid.
He says community health workers are critical for the health service delivery in the county but have remained neglected.
He says most of them have the basic training on a number of health initiatives to supplement the shortage of medical personnel in the county.
He says some of those health workers are currently being supported by NGOs some of which are phasing out.
Maneja told the assembly that the county health ministry is carrying out a survey to get the exact details of which partner is providing what support and to what level to the health workers.
He further urged the county to design a performance based incentive scheme for the health workers and explore options for funding such a scheme.
