A healthcare crisis continues to bite at Kiambu County health facilities after a strike of medical personnel.

A spot-check by our reporter at Tigoni health centre in Limuru sub-county revealed that the facility had no doctors and waiting bays were empty.

At the department of trauma and pediatrics care, patients complained of negligence by doctors.

"We have been coming here to seek medical attention but no doctor is offering the service,” lamented Gladys Wambui, a Tigoni resident.

The residents and patients urged the county government and the striking doctors to strike a deal to avert further suffering of patients.

"We appeal for the parties involved to strike a lasting solution to end the strike," said Karanja Mwangi, a resident of Red Hill.

Edward Kamau said the patients are now forced to seek medical attention from private clinics which he said are overcharging them.

Medical workers in Kiambu County have been on strike for the last 12 days and are demanding immediate payment of salary arrears and permanent employment of health workers under Economic Stimulus Programme.

Other demands are promotion of all practitioners and revision of terms of employment.

The medical crisis has led to intervention of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists' Union (KMPDU) which through its secretary general, Ouma Olunga, has given the county an ultimatum of five days to find a solution.

Kiambu County CEC for health service Dr Jonah Mwangi has been quoted saying that negotiations have been initiated to end the strike.
