The heavy downpour, which lasted for over one hour pulled down power lines and blew off roof tops in various areas within the city and adjacent areas.

The most affected area outside Kisumu city was Kasese market in Ombeyi Ward within Muhoroni constituency, where over 50 houses were destroyed.

The area Ward representative Missionary Auko said many families in Kasese slept out in the cold, and appealed to well wishers and Kenya Red Cross to come to the aid of his people and offer any form of assistance.

“The situation is bad on the ground and a quick intervention is required to assist the affected families,” said Auko.

He said that he has already contacted the office of the governor for an emergency assistance in the disaster management unit.

Auko said many children were exposed to the cold and that could put their lives at risk, adding that there was need to re-construct the blown off roof tops and offer other necessities to the affected families.

“The immediate intervention should be to return the blown off rooftops to enable these families to return to their houses,” he said.

Auko further appealed to Kenya Power to move to the area and restore power lines that were pulled down.

He called upon parents to caution their children and remain vigilant to ensure their children do not play with hanging power lines.
