Hundreds of families living along River Tana in Garissa County have been displaced by flash floods following heavy rains that pounded the area.
Residents were forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge elsewhere within the region as their homes were rendered uninhabitable after floods swept their homes away and other belongings.
Kenya Red Cross county coordinator Tusmo Ogle said the families who most of them are herders lost their livestock and belongings after the river burst its banks due to heavy rains.
Ms. Ogle said residents of Mansabubu in Fafi constituency are marooned and efforts are underway to rescue them.
“We are in the process of rescuing those who have been affected by the floods. The only boat that is being used to evacuate victims has broken down and is under repair,” said Ms. Ogle.
Garissa county commissioner Joshua Chepchieng called on the area residents living along River Tana to heed warnings and move to higher grounds so they are not caught by floods.
Mr. Chepchieng said the county government will provide relief food to the affected families but said its face with a challenge as roads to Bura, Masalani, Balambala, Modogashe are impassable.
“The residents who have been displaced lack basic necessities such as bedding, shelter, foodstuffs, and medicine but the county government is prepared to provide the affected families with all the basic necessities they need,” said Mr. Chepchieng.
Mr. Chepchieng said the most affected areas include Mansabubu in Fafi sub-county, Gurufa in Lagdera sub-county, and parts of Balambala and Dadaab sub-counties.
