There was heavy gunfire in Mandera town yesterday following a raid by suspected Al Shabaab militia. The attack left 16 Somali nationals and Seven Somali National Army military officers injured.
The soldiers were later taken to Mandera Hospital where they underwent treatment. According to the Star, the suspected terrorists had raided the country from Somalia’s border town of Bulla Hawa before the soldiers repulsed them. The militia men are said to have been in pursuit of the army troops on their way to Kenya. Confirming the incident Mandera county commissioner Fredrick Shisia said that the investigations are being conducted following the attack. He also said that there is no need for alarm since everything is under control.
“Our forces are closely monitoring the situation. We want to prevent more spillover by the militants to Kenya. So far, we have managed to contain everything,” said Shisia.
The attack comes at a time when Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) officers have intensified their effort to kick out the suspected terrorists from the country.
Coastal regional Director Nelson Marwa has, however, said that KDF need to step up in the fight against the militia.
