Heavy rainfall grounded activities in Mombasa County with residential areas among those most affected by the day-long downpour on Sunday.
A number of roads in the county turned into a nightmare for many residents due to flooding caused by the heavy rains.
The residents who have attributed the problem to poor drainage system in most parts of the county have urged the county government to build better drainage systems.
Ibrahim Bakari said they are worried of losing more property if the rains continue as they fear that the rain water will find its way into their homes.
“The drainage system is horrible. We are worried that if it rains heavily again, the situation will be worse even as we continue to count losses of damage to property,” said Bakari.
The residents had to walk carefully while crossing the roads to avoid pools of rain water.
Abdalla Juma, a bodaboda operator said the heavy rainfall greatly affected the bodaboda business as most of the customers tend to avoid motorbikes when it rains.
“Many of the roads were rendered impassable by the floods making it difficult for us to work. Regular customers had opted to board matatus,” said Juma.
The residents urged the county government to provide long-term measures to the flooding problem to ensure the county runs smoothly in future even during rainy seasons.
