Western Kenya Meteorological Department has said that the region will begin receiving heavy rains from the third week of March.

Speaking on Tuesday Kisumu Meteorological Director, Onyango Akumu, said the rainfall is expected to start in April and will go on until June.

He however warned that, the coming of rains may also impact negatively on both human and animals urging various departments to take precautions like animal vaccination.

According to the director, Water borne diseases associated with poor sanitation are likely to be experienced in areas expected to receive rainfall hence the public need to enhance hygiene.

The department also revealed that there may the upsurge of malaria in the fourth week after the rain onset.

He also called on local authorities to work on the drainage systems to avert flood like disasters which may lead to transport problems.
