Rescue efforts in areas where Cholera has been reported in Garissa County are getting difficult as heavy rains have rendered roads impassable.
Garissa County executive committee member in charge of Health Ahmednathir Omar said that three people have died of cholera in Saka, Garissa County following new cases of cholera being reported.
Mr. Omar said response team had a difficult time reaching the affected area following heavy rains that are still pounding the region.
Mr. Omar said that the county Health committee chairman and other health officers got stuck in the mud while they were on their way to Saka to assess the situation.
The health official added that the three victims were too weak by the time response team were attending to them.
The health department has however assured the public that the county department of Health has put up measures on how to contain the spread of the disease.
“The three died of cholera following heavy rains in the region. All the victims come from rural areas in Balambala sub-county.”
“The health department has dispatched more medical supplies and staff to Saka and other affected areas to support the response interventions. We are optimistic that we will contain the situation as we did in some other areas in the county,” said Mr. Omar.
Mr. Omar further said that the health department will engage Imams and local chiefs in a bid to sensitise locals to observe hygiene during this rainy season.
