Maize harvesting in Nakuru County has been delayed due to the ongoing heavy rains that have continued to be experienced in the region.

Large-scale farmers in the county now fear of great losses if harvesting is not done on time, saying they have experienced the same in the past.

“If the ongoing rains continue, I might be forced to harvest mid December yet I normally harvest my crops around November. But at the moment I can not, unless the weather situation changes,” said Florence Cherono, a large scale Farmer in Nakuru.

Cherono said that she fears there might be a reduction in harvest if the current rains continue in the coming weeks, adding that there are high chances of missing out on the targeted market after harvesting the maize.

She also added that if the current rains continue, there could be maize shortage in the county next year since the production will be greatly affected.

Most farmers have now been forced to wait and not to harvest until the rains subside.

Nakuru County is one of the regions that are widely considered a food basket for the country due to the high level of food production.
