Over the last few weeks, heavy rains have caused havoc in many parts of the country resulting in the loss of lives, livestock, damage to infrastructure, and displacement of families.
According to a press release by the Kenya Red Cross on Thursday, spillages resulting to inflows from seven folk dams led to flooding in Garissa and Tana River Counties. Consequently, 670 families were displaced in Garissa County. For many families, crops were damaged and they also lost their livestock.
Garissa and Tana River Counties were one of the hardest hit counties with approximately 1,862 acres of land belonging to 700 farmers being submerged.
There is, however, a reprieve as the Kenya Meteorological Department has reported that the rains are set to subside as the month of May comes to an end. This is because May is usually the peak of the long rains season.
