Thika Sub-County has been overwhelmed by traffic congestion since Monday after the county government moved to expand the Gatitu Junction.
The expansion activities have caused drivers using the Gatitu Junction exit to use a diversion through the Thika Firestation which is narrow and thus causing the traffic jams in the whole town.
The county government has, despite commencing the expansion, evaded the expansion of the controversial prison land road which was stopped by the Roads and Transport executive member Njeri Gatabaki earlier.
The expansion is set to reduce congestion which has been extending to Makongeni, Garissa Road and some parts of Thika superhighway.
According to Gatabaki, her department has been forced to slow the road works after the chaos that led to the injuring of 13 county ‘askaris’ who were later sent on an emergency leave to give them time to recover.
The Prison Department resisted the tarmacking of the road passing through their land saying that the county government had not consulted them.
Gatabaki said that they are going to take the shortest time possible considering they have enough man power on the ground.
Reformed alcoholics are some of those who have been hired for the expansion works.
