Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi said more than 160 families have been rendered homeless after the winds blew off the roofs of their houses.

Mwinyi, who donated Sh100,000 said the Changamwe Constituency Development Fund committee will donate more money from its emergency kitty to assist the affected families who are now homeless.

“More than 160 families have been left homeless after the windstorm. We are asking well-wishers to help the families affected by the windstorm rebuild their homes as they are in the cold in this rainy season,” said Mwinyi.

The MP, who said nobody was injured during the incident that destroyed more than 20 houses, urged the county government to help the homeless families reconstruct their houses.

Mwinyi together with Deputy Assembly Speaker Rashid Mswabah accompanied the Kenya Red Cross team to assist the affected families.

Kenya Red Cross County coordinator Mohamed Rajab, who appealed for humanitarian support from well-wishers, said the Red Cross will conduct a disaster assessment.

“We are appealing for well-wishers and the government to provide building materials so that the families can restore blown off roofs,” said Rajab.
