Mikindani Ward representative Juma Renson Thoya has sent an appeal to community school management to help children from poor families pursue their basic education.
Thoya who graced a prize giving day ceremony at the school grounds on Monday said that most children attending primary school education in community school were from poor families and sending them home because of lack of school fees was double punishment to the already suffering children.
Thoya said that in such situations where children cannot afford lunch fees or any other extra curriculum activity charges, then he should be contacted so the he can assist them continue with education.
He appealed to the teachers and managers of community schools in Mombasa to understand their pupil’s background before taking such measures of sending the children home because of lack of school fees.
“Some of these children do not have parents, homes or even guardian and they live by the mercy of the Lord, why are you becoming so inhuman and send them out of classes,” he added.
Thoya said that he has launched a programme where he is donating school uniforms and books for the poor children, most of them being orphans.
“As education stake holders, we should come together and give these angels support so that they accomplish their goals in life, some of the children as young as 10 years old are playing the roles of their late parents, we should give them maximum support and not psychologically torture,” he added.
On his part, the school Director Father Nick Hennity appealed to the government to add more teachers to the community school so that the children get quality education.
He said that the school has only 6 teachers who were not enough to manage the over 300 pupils registered in the St. Francis of Assisi Primary school at Kibarani, Mombasa.
