Speaking to the press on Tuesday, some of the children said they opted for living in the streets because of the poor state from their families at home.

"My father is a drunkard while my mother is jobless. We used to sleep hungry until I decided to run away from home to look for food," said Jacktone Makenzi.

They said poverty even made them lack a basic school education which they missed at tender age.

"We would like good samaritans to help us go to school so that we can be like other people we see here in town," he added.

Another street child who only identified himself as Festus, said the society perceives them as people who are useless.

"Let the people know that we are just like them, it is only that we are poor," said Victor.
