Longonot Ward residents have urged Nakuru County Government to help them harvest rain water during this rainy season.
Elias Migwi, a resident, says that the move will help them solve persistent water shortage experienced in the area.
Migwi faulted the local authority for being reluctant to solve water problem in the area despite it hitting the area annually.
“We have Mt Longonot just here. A lot of water that flows off the mountain flows to River Ewaso Nyiro. This water could be harvested in a dam to provide easy access to this scarce commodity during dry seasons,” noted Migwi.
The area has been hard hit by water shortages as there is no permanent water source thereby forcing the residents to walk for miles in search of water during dry seasons.
“The nearest water source available here is approximately 10 kilometres from my house. We are forced to walk for long in the onset of dry seasons and we have no reliable source of water. Our county ward representative promised to start a project of piped water to this area but he is yet to deliver,” said Catherine Wacuka, a resident.
Plans to construct a dam to collect the rain water could go a long way in providing a lasting solution to this recurrent problem.
Before the onset of the current rains, locals were hard hit buying a 20-litre jerican of water at Sh 50 others walked for miles to get the commodity.
