Herbalists in Nakuru County have been urged to play an active role in the conservation of the environment in order for them to sustain their traditional medicine practice. County deputy executive in the ministry of education, culture and sports, Joseph Tonui, said that traditional medicine practise in the county is a recognised alternative health management sector. While addressing herbalists in a workshop at Nuru Hotel in Nakuru, the executive urged practitioners to aspire for a sustainable management system for traditional medicine. “One way of providing a sustainable management for herbal medicine in the county is by you taking an active role in the conservation of natural environments. You can do this by planting indigenous trees and shrubs in your home gardens and also not taking part in wanton destruction of existing natural environments in the county like the Mau forest complex,’’ noted Tonui. He advised the Nakuru County Herbalists Association that organised the workshop to sensitise its members on the need for taking an active role in the conservation of natural environments in the country. He added that the ministry was dedicated to collaborating with local herbalists in boosting cultural heritage in traditional medicine.
