Kisii is considered to have one of considered the most prominent leaders in Kenya since the regime of third president Mwai Kibaki.
The most influential and strong leaders in the government who come form Gusii land include:
David Maraga
Maraga was born in Bonyamatuta, Nyamira County. He is the 14th Chief Justice of Kenya and the only CJ to nullify a presidential election in Kenya. The people of Gusii land have ever since celebrated his position in the government.
Sam Ongeri
He is currently the Kisii County Senator.
Prof Ongeri is considered a strong opposition supporter under the ODM ticket.
During the swearing in of Raila Odinga on 31st January, Ongeri was among the few 'faithful' leaders who attended the ceremony and the only one from Gusii.
His fearless support for the opposion made him gain popularity in the opposition affiliated counties; Kisii and Nyamira.
Fred Matiangi
The no nonsense Interior security cabinet secretary was born in Borabu, Nyamira County.
Ever since he was appointed the CS for education, he brought gradual change in the sector regardless of the political heat.
Dr Matiangi is known to work without favour. This has made him be one of the celebrated leaders from Gusii regardless of his support for the government.
Simeon Nyachae
He was born in Nyaribari Chache, Kisii County.
He is known to be one of the opposition leaders in 2004 during the Mwaki Kibaki regime under Ford- People party.
He become the minister for energy then roads.
Nyachae is the only politocian from gusii to be a presidential candidate.
He contested presidency in 2002.
In this case, Governor James Ongwae has been keeping low in politics making him dormant in his political career.
