The Witness Protection Agency (WPA) has so far offered special protection to more than 300 Kenyans.
These Kenyans receive protection from threats posed by dangerous suspects especially those linked to terrorism, murder, corruption, robbery with violence and defilement.
WPA also provides safe refuge to more than 300 close family members and acquaintances of witnesses to avert retaliatory attacks.
According to WPA deputy director of operations Pius Mwamba, most of those under the programme have crucial information.
“Protection measures we provide include physical and armed 24-hour protection, relocation and in extreme cases a change of identity,” he said.
He added that they also hold in-camera hearings, use pseudonyms and distort or obscure witness identity.
Mwamba says that those in the programme are guaranteed total security regardless of influence wielded by anyone they have damaging information against.
He added that the agency provides allowances matching one’s income during the time they are in the programme.
The agency, according to Mwamba, has received more than 700 applications so far adding that the number can grow fast if Kenyans embrace the programme.
