According to the board's CEO Charles Ringera, graduates of arts and humanities do not repay their loans on time.

Ringera revealed that late employment was the reason behind the delayed payment.

He further revealed that only 49% of the graduates get jobs a year after graduation as compared to their engineering and medicine counterparts.

Speaking at the Afya Elimu fund launch,a Sh500m project for medical diploma students, Ringera stated that arts students might not be eligible for the new HELB benefits as the board wants quick returns.

According to a research carried out by Kenyatta University and other African institutions, arts and humanities graduates may take up to 5 years to get a job as opposed to their medicine counterparts who in many occasions land instant jobs.

The board gives out Sh40,000 - Sh60,000 loans to university students each year which attracts a 4% interest.
