In his 2015/2016 report, the Auditor General Mr Edward Ouko has documented how Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) are blowing away millions of taxpayers' money on travels and some even never happened.
The MCAs are on the spot for failing to document cash advanced for local and foreign travels, the leaders overspend or exhausted allocations without documentation.
The counties on the radar of the Auditor General include West Pokot, Homa Bay, Busia, Bomet, and Kisumu.
In total, the five counties splashed Sh514 million on travels in three months, Homa Bay could not account for Sh12,168,800, while West Pokot did spend Sh62,990,641 on travels against an approved budget of Sh40,910,881.
Busia county MCAs are also on the spot for using Sh4,108,067 million for foreign travels and consultancy.
Kisumu assembly could not support the Sh2,743,026 used for domestic and foreign travel.
In Bomet county, the authorities could not furnish Ouko with justification for a ‘suspect’ two-day trip to Dubai on December 14 to 16 in 2015.
