Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya is a city holding knowledge on what survival is. If you want to get used to surviving in hard conditions then just find your way to Nairobi. Opportunities are rare in Nairobi but it takes your hard work and perseverance to find them before which you have to 'survive'.
Below are some tips on how to survive in the city without a job or during your job search;
Find a cheap single room or bedsitter
The most important thing in Nairobi is housing. Looking for a job in Nairobi means you still play low on finances and so the best thing to do is to find a cheap house mainly bedsitter or single room in places like Kibera, Githurai, Zimmerman, Kayole, Pipeline and many other ghettos in the city. Finding a cheap housing will lower your expenses on living and help you save for your future establishment.
Use cheaper means of transport
There a lot of means of transport in the city from taxi to public vehicles and trains. Being a hustler you cannot afford Uber or Taxify or any means other taxi service you know of. Use instead cheaper transport means like train which can carry you with 20 shillings to where you can spend 50 shillings on buses or matatus (ma3s]. Buses are also often cheaper than matatus, you can choose to use them to save on your transport expenses.
Sacrifice fun and entertainment
Nairobi is an entertainment city, there are a lot of entertainment hubs in the city. However, since you are still not established, you can choose to save the money you would have spent on drinks to better yourself. Sacrifice the fun until you establish yourself. You can attend seminars instead, perhaps you may land job opportunities.
Limit shopping at Nakumatt, Tuskys, Uchumi....
You can get tempted to check into some flashy Tuskys supermarket to do shopping. However, this is not the best option for you. As a hustler, you can choose to buy items from the retail shops in your hood to save more for your future establishment.
Go for cheap foods
As you walk along the streets of Nairobi, there are many flashy restaurants such as Java, KFC, Chicken Inn with mouthwatering foods. However, as a hustler, these are not your options for a daily routine. You can go to that 'mama mboga' in your hood who sells food at 50 shillings. After all food is food. Happy Nairobi Life!
