[Photo: Courtesy]Residents in Kikuyu may have a reason to smile, especially for those who support the current MP, even before the August 8 polls are conducted. This is after it was revealed that Kimani Ic'ungwa is the only unopposed candidate in all the elective seats countrywide.According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the Jubilee Party lawmaker has no opponent in the upcoming general elections. This means, he will likely be declared the winner of the Kikuyu parliamentary seat 2017, without an election being held.A similar case saw the sitting Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria being declared an unopposed MP, under TNA (now Jubilee Party), during a by-election that was to be held in August 2014.Kuria became the first unopposed candidate to be declared winner, after his challenger pulled out of the race.IEBC has already gazetted Ic'ungwa as an unopposed candidate, awaiting declaring him unopposed winner of the Kikuyu parliamentary race during the August polls. The MP has been a vocal critic of the Opposition Nasa, and a defender of his party leader, President Uhuru Kenyatta's government.During April party primaries, Ic'ungwa beat his rivals to secure the Jubilee ticket, for re-election into the 12th parliament.
