One chilly morning in the 1990s, President Daniel Moi quickly summoned the then Head of Public Service Phares Kuindwa and State House comptroller Wilson Chepkwony.
And during the days Kanu was in power, a call from Baba meant serious business.
Those summoned had to rush to the house on the hill lest they get sacked through KBC while still cruising State House Road.
That morning, Moi had a simple, clear but firm word for the trio: they could touch anyone else in government, but not Lee Njiru.Njiru, a man who was raised in Embu, was the man running Presidential Press Unit.
Since then, Njiru remained one of Moi’s most trusted poster boys.
And he has remained so even after Kanu was uprooted from power unceremoniously.
As other opportunists deserted Mzee Moi and run to the new table where the bread was buttered, Njiru boarded a chopper with the retired president that flew them to the later’s village home in Kabarak.
During an interview, the long serving press secretary to Moi said that was one of the lowest moments he has ever shared with the Kanu boss.
He is among those who know Moi and his secrets too well!
