Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago has called all the residents of the county to ensure that they plant more trees as a way of conserving the environment and increasing forest cover in the country.
Speaking at Eldoret Club on Saturday while launching tree planting on the eve of the inaugural Eldoret City Marathon set for Sunday, Mandago said that it is important to plant more trees as this was the only way to improve and conserve the environment.
While thanking Ainabkoi Member of Parliament William Chepkut for sponsoring a bill in Parliament that compels all landowners and public institutions to plant trees in at least 10 percent of their land, Mandago said that he will be leading the way by planting his land with more trees.
“I want to challenge all leaders in the County to lead as an example by planting more trees on their farm,” he said.
The county boss noted that future generation depends on the standards by the leaders in place now. He said that in the next few years, Uasin Gishu will have surpassed the 10 percent required nationally challenging public institutions to take a leading role in planting and conserving trees.
On his part conservation Secretary William Kiprono who represented Environment Cabinet Secretary in the event commented Uasin Gishu County Government for the role they are taking in planting more trees during the rainy season.
The event was marked as a curtain raiser to the Eldoret City Marathon whose theme is 'Climate Action' and the call to conserve and plant more trees is key.
