Independent electoral and boundary commission's calendar of events is being interrupted, posing dire consequences as far as elections date is concerned.
Voter register is supposed to be ready 14 days before elections. Political parties are required to share party regulations 180 days before elections and party membership 120 days before elections.
IEBC is supposed to verify all these details and also solve disputes arising from party nominations. IEBC had rolled out voter registration between February and March 2016 targeting 4 million new voters but even after extending the exercise, only 1.4 million new voters registered.
Right now, the 9 commissioners do not even know their fate as the talks between opposition and Jubilee are still on-going.
When will the "IEBC must go" stalemate be solved or when will the new team be constituted? In short, 2017 elections will not be held in August.
The IEBC calendar of events that were scheduled for this year are already spilling over to next year.
