Food business in the country has proven to be quite profitable. From big hotels, to the local ‘mama nitilie’, majority of individuals have managed to make this a dependable source of income.
Evans Kazungu a boiled eggs vendor living in Misufini, Mombasa also falls in this category. Evans was forced to drop out of high school in 2013 while in form two due to lack of school fees.
“Immediately after leaving school, I looked for casual jobs since I did not have any experience or education that would land me a white collar employment,” he said.
After two years, of doing odd jobs, Evans met a friend who introduced him to the boiled eggs business.
“At first, business was slow, and I would only manage to sell a maximum of 30 eggs per day which is equivalent to a tray. However, I kept pressing on hoping for a better outcome the next day,” said the entrepreneur.
The business has however grown since 2015. With one boiled egg going at Sh20, Evans manages to sell up to four egg trays in a day. This enables him to make a profit of about Sh1,100 after deducting his business expenses.
His base of operations is usually at Ferry shopping centre although he sometimes does rounds around Likoni.
"The money I make has enabled me pay my rent, cater for my daily expenses and even support my family,” he continued.
Nevertheless, the 21 year-old businessman is looking forward to expand his business since his ultimate goal is to open an egg deport.
