The Governor of Taita Taveta says his government is committed to empower women, youth and People Living with Disabilities who are in organised groups.
Granton Samboja made the statement after he met members of Makandenyi youth group who had paid him a courtesy call.
"The group has demonstrated commitment in its activities and has shown greater potential for growth," said Samboja.
He was impressed by its vision and how members have positioned themselves to achieve their goals.
The group already owns 13 motorbikes they procured through a loan they took from Qwetu SACCO. In a period of six months, the group has been able to access Sh1.5 million loan which they are servicing it accordingly.
Apart from this, the group has also embraced a saving culture.
"My administration will join hands with groups with similar commitments to ensure that they realize their potential as we grow together. Therefore, my administration shall strictly adhere to the 30 percent procurement rule set for youth women and people living with disabilities."
The governor indicated that he would soon be rolling out a programme that would empower the groups.
"I want these groups to apply for tenders and we'll definitely ensure that they win the tenders not because they are favoured but because it's their right to. This is key among my agenda for the County."
"We want to help these groups grow and realize their potential. I want that youth who is hired to ride Wakeshos or Sambojas motorbike to own one so that we can promote self employment. I also want those who own motorbikes to upgrade to other businesses and that how we'll realize our goals," he added on Tuesday.
Samboja further indicated that the county will hold sensitization campaigns to enlighten the community on public procurement to help the groups grow.
