The exercise saw several stakeholders such as administrators, students, teachers, youth and women groups, faith-based organizations, political leaders, Community Based Organizations (CBOs), and health volunteers take part in the activity, which was organized by Mombasa County Government in collaboration with the Sub County Administration and Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI).

The community planted numerous indigenous trees ranging from Bamboo, Tamarind, Mahogany, Mwanga among others.

KEFRI donated 1,500 seedlings for use in the exercise.

The Department of Water, Sanitation and Natural Resources Director Arafa Amur said the trees would be instrumental in holding the soil together, stabilizing the land and further prevent expansion of the gullies, soil erosion and occurrence of possible landslides.

Director of Water, Nasoro Bakari and the area Sub County and Ward Administrators appreciated locals for turning up for the exercise and urged other residents to participate in conserving the environment by taking up similar initiatives in their back yards.

They also took time to sensitize the community on public health issues and proper waste management.

Besides Mikindani, the tree planting is also scheduled to take place in other wards.
